Artist Statement

Martina Latimer is a Brisbane-based oil painter whose practice is based in observation and contemplation. Her work embraces an intentional naivety as she depicts the simple acts of connectedness that shape our lives.

Martina works within the bounds of traditional techniques, finding joy in the slow, deliberate act of rendering. Plants painted in large scale and with bright colours play a central role in her work, both as a subject and for their symbolic means. Superimposed with drawings of human interaction, they offer a grounding presence on the canvas.

Informed by philosophical writings of Martin Buber – particularly his ideas on dialogue and the sacredness of the “I and Thou” relationship, Buber’s ideas echo throughout her process: the slow act of seeing becomes a way of thinking, a quiet engagement with the world and its relationships.

The work invites viewers to a space of reflection and gentle hopefulness, offering reminders of our shared humanity and the possibility of deeper connection.
