BIOGRAPHY
Australian artist Martina Latimer (b.1979, Austria) is guided by a sustained question: how images can articulate meaning beyond language. Her works occupy a space between presence and absence, where thin layers of oil paint, blurred forms, and painted lines suggest emotional states without fully defining them. Her mark-making feels immediate, intimate, and recognisably human. Working in series, she uses repetition to reveal difference; subtle variations emerge. She posits that it is within these shifts that meaning often resides. Latimer draws on found digital photographs, isolating and enlarging fragments that hold her attention. Her practice responds to contemporary conditions shaped by technological acceleration and increasing individualisation. She foregrounds the materiality of art-making as a means of fostering slow, attentive encounters. Her images hold a sense of pause, ambiguous and restrained, they invite sustained looking.

Latimer recently presented her solo exhibition N/irgend-wo at Artspace Teneriffe and has exhibited with Wentworth Brisbane and Parker Contemporary. She was a finalist in the Turnbull Award (2025) and continues to develop her practice through painting and printmaking.

Her works are held in private collections both nationally and internationally.
