On Our Differences and Other Commonalities
Martina Latimer’s practice is guided by the question of how images can articulate meaning beyond language. The series On Our Differences and Other Commonalities starts with a found digital photograph, an image of a couple in embrace. Carefully cropped and reframed Latimer preserves the anonymity of the figure but also the image's movement between the particular and the universal. Thin layers of oil paint, blurred forms, and painted lines suggest emotional states without fully defining them. The mark making is immediate, intimate, and recognizably human. The strategy of repetition is utilised to draw attention to differences between each ‘copy’ where subtle variations emerge. The work poses that it is within these shifts that meaning often resides.
